You Are Loved

You are loved.
You are important.
You are beautiful.
You are needed.
You can do it.

These are just a few of the affirmations that 3rd grade students at John F. Kennedy Elementary used as inspiration for art projects they created last month. Lead by Teaching Artist Karuna O'Donnell, the project combined the skills of lettering, composing, painting, and drawing to create art works that uplift people and express a statement that could make a difference for someone. They learned about ancient artists and up through present day local artists in Jamaica Plain, who use art as a way to show people what truly matters to them. They discussed what it means to be a changemaker, and how we can all be changemakers through art. In this project, they created works inspired by the public art of Alex Cook, one of the artists from Jamaica Plain who focuses on public murals.
